The Resurrection of Lazarus

(John 11:1-45)

Lazarus is Ill

As we read the story, we see that Mary and Martha sent a message to Jesus concerning their brother Lazarus. At the time, Lazarus was only sick, but yet he was still alive. None of the physicians were able to alleviate the suffering of their brother hence Mary and Martha sent for the Great Physician, Jesus.

Having sent a message to Jesus, Lazarus fate worsens and then he dies. Consider the anxiety and frustration these two sisters suffered while they waited for Jesus to come. Still no sign of Jesus. The natural course of events is to prepare Lazarus’ funeral and to bury him. It is not until four days later Jesus arrives.

Mixed Messages

In the mean while, the disciples are with Jesus. What do you think was going thru their minds when Jesus received the message and their Master decided to remain at the same place for two days? On the way to Bethany, Jesus tells them that Lazarus is sleeping. This is a good sign to the disciples because they know that his resting will result in healing. But, Jesus explains that Lazarus is dead. Why continue to make the trip to Bethany? There is nothing more that Jesus can do except to give His condolences.

Jesus Arrives
